Continuation of our years, #84

84, 9-4, SHOW  NOTES & COPYRIGHTS,  (Scheduled 12/29/2022)

Today we are going to talk about the new year and what it can and hopefully will mean for us.

We’ll start with a poem that comes after the Christmas poems in God Still Rhymes. This poem was probably written in 2017

THE YEAR’S LAST THOUGHT  (God Still Rhymes, pg. 125)

(Not what it ought

Not what he brought

Not what he thought)

At that hour it was dark.

He was carrying the books

As he walked through the park.

Strangers gave him strange looks

As they crossed his path.

Pausing – you do the math:

What is two times too many?

More than a penny

But less than time?

He asked, “what of me is mine?”

Then it was as if the soles of their feet

Had trampled his soul as he crossed the street.

The task . . .

Was it lying or lying ahead?

Where was the truth

Where all was false?

Could there be an heir

Waiting in the air?

What is there,

What is fair,

Does one care,

Does one dare,

As one stares

At the stairs?

Is there danger

With the stranger?

Can the doctor

Cure the sick

By doctrine

Of infectious words

That cut and sting,

That strangle

One’s life

And maybe another’s?

Yes, in the Almighty Healer

there is Hope.

Reflection on The Year’s Last Thought

I’m sure I know why I get in moods like the one I was in when I wrote this poem.  Sometimes I distance myself from the people I should be getting closer to.  For some reason I had this foolish thought going through my mind for quite a few days.  The thought, are all poets tortured souls.  I had no I idea.  I just knew that I was allowing myself to be that tortured soul.  Was it so I could write this poem?  I didn’t know.  But, I do know there was a reason for it.  Now as I am writing this explanation I know it was God calling me to come home again.  I added the last two lines after realizing God’s purpose for this poem.

Discussion:

As I reread this poem when looking for poems or today’s podcast, I realized that is reminds me of today, how in the world we are living in now can do this to us if we do not have Jesus to lift us up and above the everyday – everything the world wants for us.

The next poem is from one of the unpublished files.

GO GENTLE

Go gentle into the night

And into the fading light.

There is no more fight

Surviving on God’s might.

The shadows will fall

As you hear God’s call.

There will come a time

When you hear His rhyme.

Worry not about the morning dew

Knowing that God loves you.

Go gentle into your living,

Embrace what God is giving.

Discussion:

Even though this was written many months into the year, I believe that it is how we should start our new year, by turning over our lives to Jesus.  We can turn over a new leaf with a New Year’s resolution year after year, or we can turn over everything to Jesus and let Him lead us into joy and satisfaction that is everlasting.  Once and always forever.

One from God’s Rhyme

HIS BLESSINGS RHYME  (God’s Rhyme, pg. 88)

My hopes, my needs, the cure for my ills

All in God’s time

By prayer and faith my needs He fulfills

His blessings rhyme

Day by day and night time too

It seems the hours though many

Are more times than not too few

As I’m earning that penny

How many times can I say

As ev’ry day passes by

If I could only now pray

Do I ever question why

My hopes, my needs, the cure for my ills

All in God’s time

By prayer and faith my needs He fulfills

His blessings rhyme

I must make the time each day

Although I may wonder how

To be more thankful, to pray

But the time, it must be now

He answers when I need Him

My spirit He can raise

When my prayer is like a hymn

Said like a song of praise

My hopes, my needs, the cure for my ills

All in God’s time

By prayer and faith my needs He fulfills

His blessings rhyme

I can pray when life’s gone wrong

If I pray when all is right

How much more blessed will the song

Be I can hear in His light

Through His Son’s death on the cross

He has saved my soul from sin

Thru prayer He saves me the loss

Of joy I will have with him

My hopes, my needs, the cure for my ills

All in God’s time

By prayer and faith my needs He fulfills

His blessings rhyme

Discussion:  If I remember this, every day, though maybe not perfect as I live on this earth, is a day of hope to experience God’s rhymes.  The past is behind me, God is with me today and forever.  I need one new day; the day I give my life to Jesus.

Finally, a poem for the New Year written at Dave’s request.

IN THE COMING YEAR

Consider the power

Of every hour

The Father shares with us

Through His Son, Jesus

In this coming year

Do not live in fear

Of the unknown

Seeds others have sown

Start this year

Kneeling to pray

Throughout the day

So you may hear

His saving voice

And know the choice

Before you

In all you do

Is to take God’s hand

And understand

You have found your worth

Is not of this earth

Be blessed

In God’s rest

Discussion:

Spend time with God, be willing to receive what He has for you. Open your heart and let Him speak into your heart, going deep into your soul.

AS WE CLOSE IN PRAYER, MAY WE CONTINUE IN PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father we come to you in prayer as we end today’s podcast.  Dave and I thank You for Your leading us through the day and into the coming new year.

We pray for our listeners and viewers; for their needs, healing and the salvation of those who have not yet accepted the gift of Your grace by faith.

We pray, Lord, for this world in which we live.  Father, as Christians lead us to proclaiming the gospel where ever we are.  May we do so in a loving  way.  Lead us to the truth of the days we are living in.  We pray for the nation of Ukraine and its people; its leaders, those who have fled the country to find safety, those who are still trying to leave the country and those who are staying to fight the invading army of their enemy.   May their faith and determination be an example to the entire world.  We also pray for Your Church as we face a world that marginalizes us.  Give us the strength to share Your word and our faith where ever You lead us.

Dear Lord, prepare us and our listeners and viewers for the coming week.  We pray that it is You we live for and You who leads us.  As we walk with you  this week, may it be Your hand clasped around our hand so we may feel the grasp of Your love.  We pray that everyone has a blessed New Year

We pray in the name of Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer.

Amen
